The Origin and Meaning of Tara Mahavidya

 


The name “Tara” carries the profound idea of crossing over, being carried across or receiving guidance through difficulty. Spiritually, this crossing is not limited to rescue from external danger.

Every human being encounters inner currents of fear, grief, attachment, confusion and uncertainty. Maa Tara’s philosophy encourages us to move from fear towards courage, from confusion towards clarity and from ignorance towards deeper awareness.

Her fierce yet compassionate appearance also carries an important lesson. Strength and compassion are not opposites. Just as a loving mother becomes firm while protecting her child, Divine compassion may also appear in a powerful form.

Based on scriptural understanding and reflections from my 35 years of spiritual experience, I have explored the origin, meaning and deeper philosophy of Tara Mahavidya in this article.
